Most people glance at these flourishing plants and immediately jump to the easy conclusion that roses are sun-loving species that crave every hour of unfiltered direct sunlight they can get, so they immediately move their newly potted rose saplings to the most exposed spot on their rooftop or south-facing open balcony after bringing them home from local plant markets. What they usually find out two to three weeks later, though, is that the leaf edges start to turn dry and crisp, the tender new buds blacken before they can open, and the lower leaves turn pale yellow and drop off even if they water the soil every single day.

The core of this common horticultural misunderstanding traces back to the natural wild habitats of all rose species that exist across Europe, North America and East Asia. All people need to do is position their rose bushes in spots that get gentle morning sun and partial shade from larger shrubs or building walls for the rest of the day, then spread a 5 centimeter thick layer of shredded bark or fallen oak leaves over the soil around the base of the bush to keep the root system cool. After making these tiny adjustments, most people see their rose bushes start producing successive waves of blooms from late spring all the way to early autumn, with far less yellowing of leaves and far fewer pest problems that used to demand constant spraying of treatments. Many people who follow this rule also find that the cut rose flowers they pick for indoor vases last two full days longer than flowers from bushes grown under full all-day sunlight, since the partial shade environment lets the plants build up more natural sugar reserves inside each petal.
