For most regions that grow sweet osmanthus as a common landscape tree, the peak blooming window falls somewhere between late September and mid October, when most deciduous trees still hold full, deep green canopies with no obvious signs of yellowing leaves. The tiny pale golden or creamy white blooms tuck themselves tightly in the gaps between thick leathery leaves, so well hidden that people often walk right past a fully blossomed osmanthus tree without spotting a single flower at first glance. Many new observers assume that the blooms will release their signature honeyed, fresh fragrance nonstop once they finish opening, but this assumption is far from the truth: for more than half of the blooming period, the flowers give off barely any scent detectable from more than an arm’s length away, and the strong, far-reaching fragrance that osmanthus is famous for only appears under very specific environmental conditions.
All of osmanthus’s signature sweet scent comes from tiny, translucent essential oil sacs inside the thin layers of its petal cells.
