For a very long time, casual observers assumed osmanthus gives out consistent scent for the entire seven to ten days of its blooming period, as long as petals remain fresh and attached to branches. This assumption falls apart completely when a short unexpected warm front pushes through in the middle of blooming season, lifting daily high temperature up to 25 degrees Celsius overnight. All the sweet, floating aroma vanishes within hours, leaving no trace even within half a meter of the heavily flowering shrub, even when no petal has wilted or fallen off its growing position. Most small pollinator species only move around for very short windows on cool sunny days, when the temperature stays perfectly mild and no unexpected rain or cold snap occurs. The scattered limited pollinators rarely travel over long distances in search of food, so osmanthus needs to release an extremely high concentration of scent at the right time to make sure it can be noticed before these small insects finish their daily activities.

By only releasing high concentration scent on days that meet the exact temperature requirements, osmanthus can avoid wasting huge amounts of energy on days when no pollinators will fly around at all, and gather all its scent output into narrow perfect windows to spread the sweet smell far enough to attract every possible pollinator within several hundred meters of its location.
